Working with members of the Interfaith Mission Service, Rev. Alice Syltie of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Huntsville, Alabama, created a committee to organize a Peaceful Rally and Interfaith Prayer Walk in opposition to the recently passed anti-immigrant law in Alabama, known as HB 56. HB 56 criminalizes any assistance given to undocumented aliens, whether their status is known or not, and promotes racial profiling. The Latino community in Alabama feels especially threatened by this new legislation. The rally and walk, titled “Nos Abrazamos/A Call to Linking Arms,” was an interfaith effort to express opposition to the bill, which makes illegal much of the work faith communities are called to do.
Submitted by Bobby Hall, Worship Committee Chair at the UU Church of Huntsville and member of the Rally & Walk organizing committee.
