Stonewall 2009?

From Tim Atkins, a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta

On September 10th, the Atlanta Police Department raided a well known gay bar, the Eagle Atlanta. All 62 patrons were forced to lay down on the ground, be searched, and have their IDs run.  Note that not a single patron was arrested for any charge, despite the three paddy wagons the Atlanta Police Department brought with them.  When word of a rally to show support spread, the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Atlanta’s Interweave Group (a group committed to supporting LGBT people) knew they had to do something.  We emailed groups both inside UUCA and other UU Congregations of Metro Atlanta to build support.  Rev. Marti Keller from UUCA announced the rally from the pulpit on Sunday, during our Ingathering service, and Rev. Anthony David promised to attend.  About thirty members from UU congregations in Atlanta attended the rally.  We had to show our support to the community, and to take a stand for love.

In the age of Stonewall, this would have been called by its true names: abuse of power, police brutality and harassment.
