This morning, as I drove to my Fellowship, an SUV flew by me in an active school zone going at least 45 MPH. I watched him pass two more vehicles in and pull into a gym parking lot. I followed him in and as he got out of his vehicle I rolled down my window and told him calmly that school zone speed limits exist for a reason. He responded with obscenities and moved threateningly toward me. He was a large fellow obviously wanting to instigate a physical confrontation and intimidate me. I drove away.

I was afraid this morning. I am still shaking a little as I type this message. But, if we all stand up to the bullies in our lives, who knows what good can come out of our actions down the road. I talk and preach about Unitarian Universalism being a religion that emphasizes courage. Standing on the Side of Love takes great courage.

Wow! Representative Ellison's speech makes so much sense. It seems so logical, so realistic, so achievable. Why would anyone not embrace this way of living?

Thank you for sharing that powerful excerpt from Representative Ellison's speech at General Assembly. It's so true! If more people embraced LOVE as a guiding principle in our lives, there would be far fewer problems and we would be able to provide for those in need in our society.

There is enough (resources); it just needs to be distributed more justly.

Leilani,

I have a feeling we were raised in the same religion, and I often talk with my LGBTQ friends about how I had to "come out" to my family as a supporter of LGBTQ rights. I also married a man of unconditional love outside of my family's faith. My parents have learned to accept this and love my husband as part of the family now, but it took them some time. They were distressed that I would not have the perfect "Temple Wedding" but now they realize that we have true love, and that is what really counts. I am proud to stand with you, on the side of love.

Sincerely,

Emily

Talking gently and leaving space for others in the conversation is critical to understanding each other. Like the mother of the two children above I have been susprized at my spouses telling me about how frequently I interupt her and talk more than my share.

Thanks for sharing

Dear Reverend,

It would better help your followers and believers to know that you sustain the law rather than making a mock of it by your protests and requests to the Executive branch of government.

It would be better if you believe the laws are unjust to work to get them adjusted through the Legislature. What you have forgotten is that the majority of Americans think these laws are just and need to be enforced. Therefore to us, you are risking being a criminal by your civil disobedience.

God bless you, however, in your religious ministry.

Sincerely,

Michael Winward

I too was troubled to read that Lowe's had cancelled due to pressure from American Family Association. I got the customer relations phone number and called--and I got the answer that the advertising was cancelled before hearing from AFA.
Our local store, in Ames, Iowa, hired several gay friends, puts women in charge of hardware and hires people of color...so the accusation that Lowe's was bigoted did not add up to me.
I am disappointed that they didn't make a statement that they stand in solidarity with all American citizens, no matter what their religion.

Thanks for 'Standing on the side of love'..
But, SORRY, it doesn't work for me. Lowes bowed to a vaey small organization.
Based om thier thoughts, if a number of people complained about them buying Chinese products, we should expect to see them taken OUT of Lowes stores!
My opinion, someone high up at Lowes carries those anti Muslim issues, and that is what caused the action. If Lowes was to reject that therory, that person would be gone.

Thank you to Rev. Leach for engaging in this discussion. I have written to Lowe's with no response to date. In the meantime I have avoided shopping at Lowe's which previously had been my favorite home improvement store. I hope that their knee-jerk reaction to a few intolerant people will back-fire on their lack of commitment to their stated values.

Thanks Jay, for demonstrating how important it is to engage in respectful, face-to-face dialogue. I am glad to hear Lowes' side of the story and agree with your assessment. I am not surprised, but am disappointed. Here's hoping they learn from this experience.

We are so proud of you and happy for Hawaii! It seems like a long time ago that we met at a phone bank for NO on 8 here in SoCal and look at where we are now!

The cardinal is WRONG to compare Chicago's gay community (nothing like a terrorist group) to the KKK (probably the most famous domestic terrorist group in U.S. history). Most Catholics are too timid or apathetic to speak out against the cardinal's remarks, but they shouldn't be. Chicago's gay pride parade isn't anti-Catholic . . . and comparing it to a KKK event is just a thinly veiled form of discrimination.

The "Florida Family Association" is just a single guy named David Caton. Caton objects to this program because he feels it "is propaganda clearly designed to counter legitimate and present-day concerns about many Muslims .... The show profiles only Muslims that appear to be ordinary folks."

I object to this bigotry and I went to the entire list of corporations who Caton claimed to have pulled their advertising from the show. I wrote to all the corporations with whom I have had a business relationship, including JP Morgan-Chase.

My representative at JPM contacted corporate management and, after several days, learned that JPM still advertises on the program. Good for them!

More important, though, this is proof that Caton is not only a bigot but also a LIAR.

Dear Cardinal George,

Jesus is reported to have said, "You will know them by their fruits. Are grapes gathered from thorns, or figs from thistles?" Cardinal George, surely you must know the difference between grapes and thorns, figs and thistles, love and hate? One stings the tongue, the other sweetens it.

I am one of your Catholic children that was lost to the Church years ago due to hateful rhetoric. Think of the tremendous gifts of so many that you could be celebrating and inviting into ministry... only to sweeten your church communities and their impact in the world.

May your heart and soul recognize the truth --
Rev Julia McKay

I listened to Rick Garcia and Company in Chicago on shutting down Catholic Charities. That's a pretty hateful bunch. They're marching the Gay Pride Parade right by Our Lady of Mount Carmel's during Mass (a parish with more Gay Catholics by the way than Chiago has UUs).

I asked a Gay friend once why Chicago's Gay Lobbies were so locked into politics and groups who on the side made it perfect clear they detested them, and he told me there are those against us, and those against those against us, but very few for us.

Considering the work Catholic Charities and the Church has done with HIV afflicted and dying in Chicago, it's really an abomination the Lobby would turn on the Church the way they've done the past year in Illinois (Pat Hicky's blog has a list of the work).

Cardinal George perfectly justified feeling he's the target of anti Catholic bigotary because that's exactly what it is.

I'm Catholic and disturbed and upset by Cardianl Geroge's KKK remarks. His lack of chriatian charity is offensive to me and my family. He and Archbishop Dolan do not speak for many Catholics with their rhetoric and hateful statements. "These people" Dolan refers to are children made in the image and likeness of God. When they, George and Dolan, show us how to live as Jesus would have wanted, then more Catholics will be accepting of the Church they represent. It is my Church, too. I'm staying, but not listening to the hate they speak. It is my hope that both of them will apologize for the statements. But we all know Catholic Bishops, Archbishops and Cardinals don't apologize!

Rev. David-I am very sorry that this happened to your fellowship, recently. The UU Fellowship of San Dieguito has had a long tradition of leadership in the social action area. You have accentuated the positive nature of that fine tradition since you have become their Settled Minister. Please do not allow these misguided souls to deflect you from your peace and social justice purposes. I am very proud of your fellowships stands on the side of love for all of your constituencies. It will take a tremendous and continuing effort over time to help raise the consciousness of all of those around us, and I admire the UUFSD for the fine work you do in this regard.

I agree, it was a hateful thing to say and hopefully the Cardinal will be awoken by this publicity to a more Christ-like demeanor. But let's not let Faux News get us too riled up -- this is how they make their money, folks, by accentuating the horrible, the hateful and the divisive. I refuse to click on a Fox link for that reason.

I grew up in church and now hold a Masters of Divinity. I have great respect for the Catholic Church. What I don't respect is bigotry, divisiveness, and deliberate attempts to alienate people from their spiritual selves. Likening members of the gay community to the KKK is a horrible statement to be coming from a spiritual leader. You realize, don't you, there are millions of gay and lesbian people in the Catholic church? That your statements won't change who they are but will cause them pain with you hateful words? I assume you DO respect your office and your church? Do you also respect the people who attend your churches? It will seem questionable so a certain portion of that body now.

Dear Cardinal George,

Although I am a Unitarian Universalist, I have always respected the Catholic Church. So it is with sadness that I write to you today to tell how disappointed I am about your comments regarding gay people and your analogy of their rhetoric as being like the Klu Klux Klan. I find this extremely offensive and think that an apology from you is in order.

Having visited your beautiful campus, I was saddened by a seemingly mindless act of vandalism. And as a member of the Palomar UU Fellowship in nearby Vista, CA, I am also saddened by the hate that sometimes spills out in our mostly peaceful, always lovely North San Diego County. Blessings and love to you as you work to erase the damage. Your thoughtful message was perfect!

Just a few minutes reflection on Buddhist, Christian, and Hebrew beliefs regarding forgiveness radiated a message of good sense as well as benevolence in standing on the side of love. I certainly am strengthened by knowing that your community feels this way after such an act. Until recently I was a close member of a UU community in Chicago, but am now in a remote area of the west with none. Your message sends light even here for which I am grateful. Thank you.

To Rev. David and the Members of San Dieguito
I thank you for your continued courage. I appreciate the love and caring you share with one another and with the wider community. Your response to this act shows your commitment to standing on the side love...may you continue to do so always. Blessings to you all in this Holiday Season.

Diversity of views? Erm,no. The uu Facebook page kicks off anyone who just supplies a link to responsible natl bodies -- uRban LEague etc-- who specifically criticize uu for it's avowed amnesty open borders 8 mill non-ag jobs for illegals policy (a majority view of Uu members). That 's vandalism Imho

I know how this feels. I go to Neighborhood UU Church in Pasadena CA. We had our marriage equality banner shreded 3 or 4 times. We stood our ground each time, just as you are. No one said it would be easy, but it will definitely be worth it!
