Courageous Love: Zach Wahls
This February, the Iowa House voted 63-37 to approve House joint Resolution 6, a constitutional amendment that would ban not just marriage between same-sex couples, but all same-sex unions in the state.
Iowa is one of a handful of states that has ended marriage discrimination. A unanimous ruling in 209 by the state’s highest court declared that denying marriage to same-sex couples is unconstitutional. In the Nov. 2010 election, voters ousted three of the supreme court justices in a retention elections.
Iowa’s Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has vowed to block any such amendment from getting a vote in the Senate, where Democrats hold a majority. If passed through both legislative bodies in two consecutive General Assemblies, the issue could be on the ballot as soon as 2013.
At the House hearing, 19-year-old Zack Wahls spoke with impressive conviction and poise about growing up with two moms. Rarely does someone say it better. Watch the video for yourself. It will be three minutes well spent.
