Courageous Love: Muriel Roberts
Muriel has been my mentor and role model since I became committee chair of the Welcoming Congregation Committee of the PUUF in Pocatello with her seemingly endless energy, devotion and courage to standing on the side of love. She has been active in the League of Women Voters for 44 years, been a Member of the Common Cause since 1971, and active in the Bannock County Democratic Party Central Committtee.
She cares about her community through being a member of the City of Pocatello Citizen’s Advisory Committee for “our Valley Our Vision”, an effort Member of the City of Pocatello Open Space Committee; the effort to preserve open space in our community.
She courageously Stands on the Side of Love by her active participation in Pocatello 2 Great 4 Hate since its inception. Has organized vigils opposing the war in Iraq, was active in the local committee of Idaho Votes NO on HJR 2; the 2006 constitution amendment to define marriage as between a man and a woman. She stood up against torture by participating in a demonstration during Judge Jay Bybee’s visit to Pocatello. More recently, participated in a march in Ogden, Utah to support the passage of a city-wide LGBT anti-discrimination ordinance. She was an organizer of the recent Pocatello march for Human Rights – the effort to amend Idaho’s Human Rights statute to include LGBT citizens. Within the past weeks, Muriel reached out to a local mother who’s young gay son committed suicide, offering her support, inviting her to our Fellowship where she would find those who could help her heal.
On February 6th, Muriel was awarded the Love Award during our service. Thank you Muriel for all you do and for helping to show us the way.
