We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to pass compassionate, comprehensive immigration reform. Our plan is for a massive mobilization of our community and partners to hold visits with members of Congress during the in-state district work period from March 25-April 5.

Join the Standing on the Side of Love webinar on Wednesday, March 13 at 8pm ET for an informative presentation on meeting with your federal representatives.

Congress will likely pass Comprehensive Immigration Reform (CIR) legislation this year and whether it is compassionate in addition to comprehensive depends on how much we and other faith communities influence the outcome.

We asked you to commit to doing an in-district advocacy visit, i.e. neighbor-to-neighbor meeting, with your members of Congress. In-district visits are one of the most effective ways to ensure that your voice is heard.

More than 30 congregations have already signed up to conduct visits and several UU State Advocacy Networks are making plans for these as well. We’ve also heard from UU leaders of congregations participating in interfaith community organizations that are visiting their Members of Congress. Please call now and make an appointment to meet with yours ASAP. It’s easy to make an appointment to speak with your legislators, and a small group from your community can have a real impact.

Never done a lobby visit before? No worries! We can help walk you through the process. This call will also be informative for folks who are comfortable with advocacy, but want a refresher, along with some up to the minute details on where we currently stand with compassionate immigration reform.

This spring, we have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to pass compassionate, comprehensive immigration reform. As people of faith, we must raise our voices for an immigration reform bill that promotes justice and compassion, and that keeps families together. Last year, we stood on the side of love in Phoenix, faithfully witnessing against the harsh practices and policies directed against immigrants and their families. What we did in Phoenix was meaningful, but now what? What is next on the Road from Phoenix?

No matter where you live, you can make a difference in this debate. The first step is to commit to doing an in-district lobby visit, i.e. neighbor-to-neighbor meeting, with your members of Congress. We have cause to celebrate. American society is well on the way to reflecting the diversity of a globalized world. As the director of the Shoulder-to-Shoulder campaign, I have the privilege of working in the midst of this beautiful multiplicity of thought, faith, and culture every day.

Growth in religious diversity offers rich opportunities for engagement across lines of faith and inspires my own commitment to continue this important work. I have had the privilege of witnessing how interfaith communities support one another in their shared needs for vibrant worship, and in service to address common social concerns. As such, interreligious communities play an important role in ensuring that the road to a truly multicultural society is normative, not hostile.

As the saying goes, change doesn’t always come easy. While American Muslims make up just .9 percent of the U.S. population, 2010 FBI hate crimes statistics indicated a 50 percent increase in attacks targeting American Muslims. That is the fastest growing rate of hate crimes amongst American religious groups, and it has held steady in recent years.

We cannot sit idly by while members of our communities are targeted with hate and violence. Join me for the “Taking Action Against Anti-Muslim Bigotry” webinar on February 28. We’ll discuss ways of challenging anti-Muslim bigotry from individualized attacks, to proposed anti-Shari’ah legislation and stereotypical rhetoric.

Learning about Transgender Identity

trans_logoI grew up with many privileges. Privileges of color, class, gender, physical ability—even height! While my parents weren’t activists, they instilled in me an insistence that everyone be treated fairly.

My journey has been one of listening: listening to historically marginalized people, hearing their stories, coming gradually to understand better their struggles, their courage, and their wisdom. Over the years, I’ve learned a lot from books that shook my complacency and pierced my heart. Books like The Feminine Mystique, The Autobiography of Malcolm X, Rubyfruit Jungle.

But I’ve learned even more from the people I’ve met who have challenged my assumptions, shattered my stereotypes, and deepened my compassion. Alex Kapitan is one of those people.

A few months ago, Alex visited my congregation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and presented a workshop on transgender identity and inclusion. I can’t remember ever learning more in such a short time!

Alex is funny, engaging, empathetic, self-deprecating, and wicked smart. He completely charmed my congregation, ranging from octogenarian Boston Brahmins to queer youth. I continue to draw regularly on the stories and insights Alex generously shared with us.

Alex’s interactive webinar will provide practical, concrete ways for increasing our mindfulness and support of people of all identities and ways of expressing gender. The workshop is for everyone—whether you’ve had zero exposure to these issues or live them every day. Participants will gain a greater understanding of terminology, the experiences of transgender people, and the ways in which all of us are impacted by gender norms and expectations.
